Webinar: Financing the Net Zero Transition in Emerging Markets – Africa Region

Invest Africa, in partnership with the Emerging Markets Transition Investment project, is delighted to invite you to the second webinar discussion in a series on Financing the Net-Zero Transition in Emerging Markets with a focus on Africa.

On the 27th of October, at 09:00 to 11:00 BST, African business, investment and policy leaders will be discussing how the continent can effectively commit to net-zero strategies while simultaneously driving its economic development.

Keynote Speaker: Samaila Zubairu
President & CEO | Africa Finance Corporation

Webinar Background

Africa is set to bear the brunt of the impact of climate change. At the same time, it is crucial to continue to drive economic development, focusing on diversifying sources of inclusive growth and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. A key challenge is energy, as 600 million Africans still lack access to it. Additionally, Africa has a key role to play in global decarbonisation through its abundant natural resources: the continent’s forests absorb 1.1-1.5 billion tons of CO2 annually and the continent boasts 60% of the best solar resources globally, of which only 1% is utilised. Achievement will require mobilising billions of dollars of capital.

The EMTI Initiative

The Emerging Markets Transition Investment (EMTI) project has been created to identify solutions to mobilise the investment required to achieve the transition to net-zero in EMDEs. The project is supported by the UN-convened Net Zero Asset Owner Alliance, the Centre for Nature and Climate of the World Economic Forum and the EU-ASEAN Business Council. The EMTI project would like to thank Prudential for sponsorship of this webinar.

This webinar will address the following questions:

  • Can emerging markets achieve net zero without sacrificing economic progress?

  • What do African countries need from the international community to support the transition?

  • What barriers exist to financing green projects in Africa and how can they be made more attractive for the investment community?

  • What is the role of the private sector, and how are they transforming their business processes and operations to ensure they do not contribute to the worsening climate change?

  • How can we incentivise the uptake of renewable energy sources across Africa?
