Koosum Kalyan is a South African Businesswoman. Her first employment was as an economist for the Electricity Commission in Melbourne, Australia for two years.  After that she was senior economist at the Chamber of Mines in South Africa. 

Koosum then joined Shell South Africa as economist and member of the Shell Global Scenario Planning Team.

She also served as GM Executive for Shell Southern Africa before her expatriate   posting to Shell International in London for 9 years responsible for New Business in Africa, Nigeria, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique and new country entry into Angola, Libya, Tanzania.

Koosum was Chairman of the Reserve Bank’s Bank Note Company and on the Boards of the Reserve Bank Mint Company, Standard Bank, AOS Orwell Oil and Gas in Nigeria, Petmin Mining, MTN Group and EdgoMerap Energy in London, Commonwealth Business Council Tallberg Foundation, Sweden and Hayley’s Energy in Sri Lanka and South African Airways.

She currently serves on the Boards and International Advisory Councils of Aker Solutions in Norway, Gardaworld in Canada, Anglo-American, Norwegian African Business Association in Norway, Invest Africa and Thabo Mbeki Foundation.

She was a Lead member for Private Sector Liaison for Tony Blair’s Africa Commission and recently appointed to the Global Board of “The Hunger Project”, New York.

She is the founding member of the Kendra Community Business Forum in Durban and Patron and Board member of the Oldest(99 years )  and largest Home for the frail, aged, orphans and abused women.

Koosum Graduated from University of Durban Westville with a B Com Law and Honors Economics degrees, also completed the Senior Executive Management Program at London Business School and Leadership Management Program at Shell Leadership Institute.

 She is a passionate change-maker in Africa and sought-after speaker on Africa matters. She was selected by Empowerdex as a trailblazer who achieved 4th position from amongst all Directors in South Africa.
