Honoris United Universities Achieves International Recognition for Medical Research
Research from the pioneering Honoris Medical Simulation Center in Tunis was presented at the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare in Orlando, USA
Tunis, 23 January 2023 – Honoris United Universities (HUU) attended the world's largest conference dedicated to innovation in the field of medical simulation (IMSH 2023). The Honoris Medical Simulation Center in Tunis, Tunisia presented the results of a randomized controlled trial in medical simulation undertaken at its world-class facility.
Led by the Society of Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) is the largest scientific conference dedicated to the latest innovations and best practices in medical simulation. Chadli DZIRI, MD, FACS, Professor Emeritus of General Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of Tunis - Tunis El Manar University, Director of the Honoris Medical Simulation Center, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and Member of the Board of Directors of the American Journal of Surgery, presented at the summit the results of a randomized controlled trial involving more than 170 second-year Honoris health school nursing students, focusing on medical pedagogy and comparing two training techniques: LFS (mannequin) low-fidelity simulation versus standardized patient training (SP) for peripheral venous line placement. The abstract of the cross over randomized trial was selected by the SSH organizers. The study protocol has been registered on the Pan African Clinical Trial Registry website (www.pactr.org).
Founded in 2018, the cutting-edge Honoris Medical Simulation Center (MSC) is located in the heart of Tunis. It was developed in coordination with international experts and using advanced technologies. In 2020, the MSC was one of the first centers in Africa to be accredited by SSH: one of three accredited centers among eleven on the continent. The center offers 4 simulation units including mannequin technologies in a hospital setting, scenario-based simulations, actor-based simulations, and cutting-edge virtual reality technologies. More than 5,000 students, 400 healthcare professionals, and more than 60 obstetricians from Northern and Sub-Saharan Africa have been trained at this facility.
Professor Chadli Dziri MD, Director of the Honoris MSC in Tunis, commented, “Our presence at this year’s IMSH was a fantastic opportunity to share our best practice and findings from the use of our technology and innovative methods, continually testing and learning to improve both learner and patient outcomes. I am glad that the Honoris Medical Simulation Center is seen as a reference point for global medical simulation as we continue to provide unique access to a depth and breadth of cutting-edge simulation services that have not been available before on a pan-regional level.”
Given its unique network in education in Africa, Honoris is committed to continuing publishing academic research from its centers of excellence, particularly in the key employability sectors for Africa including health sciences, business, and engineering & IT. By encouraging research collaborations across institutions in multiple markets, Honoris can harness the collective power of its pan-African platform and apply health tech solutions and immersive learning technologies to advance teaching and learning in its hubs in Tunisia, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa. To continually improve outcomes for its student population of over 40 nationalities, Honoris plans to expand its medical simulation offering to Nigeria and Morocco in the short term.
Each year, IMSH provides the tools and resources healthcare professionals need to advance their skills, impact change in delivery systems and practice, and, ultimately, improve patient safety. With over 4,000 attendees in 2022, the event welcomes attendees from all over the world including researchers, teachers, doctors, and innovators for networking, hands-on workshops, plenary speakers, 300 education sessions, and an exhibit hall for the latest products and services in the sector.
