Mukami Kuria, Pupil Barrister, CANDEY

Mukami was called to the bar of England and Wales in July 2023, and is currently a pupil barrister at CANDEY. During her time at CANDEY she has gained experience in the firm’s core practice areas of complex commercial litigation, international arbitration and sanctions, involving parties in the UK and abroad.

Though London-based, from where she advises clients across the world, she has experience of disputes work in Africa, spanning commercial and investor-state arbitration. Recent instructions include acting as part of a team representing a West African energy company in LCIA proceedings and representing a claimant in LCIA proceedings in a commodities dispute in Southern Africa. She has advised on matters of public and private international law in relation to African disputes and more generally, including in relation to employment, immunity, and jurisdictional challenges.

Mukami has a particular interest in banking and financial services, working on claims involving breaches of the FCA rules and consumer duties, as well as acting for and against financial institutions on various matters. Her work has included advising on the Money Laundering Regulations 2017 and acting for clients in debanking disputes with retail banks. She worked as part of a team advising clients affected by EU sanctions as holders of securities on the Russian Depositary (NSD) account with Euroclear, with the team successfully obtaining a licence from the Belgian Treasury for the release of frozen assets. Mukami has also advised in relation to complex cross-border insolvency and set-off claims in relation to secured charges in banking and cross-border payments.

Mukami holds degrees from the London School of Economics and Political Science and the University of Cambridge (LL.M. in International Law), having been awarded various prizes during her studies (Goodwin and Philip Noel-Baker Prizes, LSE). She was an Exhibition Scholar and Major Scholar of Inner Temple for her legal studies (GDL and Bar Vocational Studies).
