Anthony Lowther, Senior Director, Healthcare & Life Sciences, Africa, Department for Business & Trade

An experienced, recognised Senior Business Leader within the International Medical Device / Pharmaceutical / Life Sciences arena – with extensive International Commercial and Government experience across both European and the African Continents. Anthony (Tony) has led businesses for major Multinational Healthcare & MedTech Corporations in Europe including Johnson & Johnson & Zimmer, and in South and Sub Saharan Africa where he delivered turnaround strategies for both Stryker Corporation and Alcon Laboratories. Tony also led Ascendis Medical, a listed South African entity within the Healthcare and Wellness space, to the position of the #1 Medical Devices Company in South Africa, in terms of revenue and margin. He can demonstrate a consistent track record of growth, change management, innovation, employee engagement, tactical execution & planning. He has significant cross-functional team management experience and P&L responsibility and management >$180m.

Tony has held several Board appointments with both British and South African Professional bodies – including -

  • NJR Steering Committee

  • Industry advisor to both NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) and MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency)

  • Member of the ABHI Council

  • Former Board member for SAMED (South African Medical Devices Association) and Founder/Chair of OSIS (Orthopaedic Special Interests Section). Tony has recently been appointed Chair of Trustees for ‘The Spirit Foundation’ - a charitable body dedicated to opening and improving care pathways for patients in remote and impoverished geographies. A British National – Tony has lived and worked in South Africa for over a decade, and has deep knowledge of both Private and Public Sector systems, Funders and Hospital Groups across the African continent.
