The UAE-Africa Investment Corridor has become a crucial axis in global economic relations, with the United Arab Emirates making significant investments across the African continent. The UAE stands as a top investor in Africa, with its foreign direct investment (FDI) stock surpassing $60 billion, making it the leading GCC investor and the fourth-largest global investor in Africa.
This growth is driven by the UAE’s strategic initiatives, which focus on addressing Africa’s critical infrastructure needs and promoting sustainable development. Africa faces an annual infrastructure gap estimated at $150 billion, and the UAE’s efforts are directed at bridging this gap. The UAE’s commitment to renewable energy is clear, with $4.5 billion invested in clean energy projects across the continent. Additionally, logistics plays a key role, with companies such as DP World and Abu Dhabi Ports Group actively developing port and logistics infrastructure.
Non-energy trade between the UAE and Africa has grown significantly, rising from approximately $20 billion in 2012 to $60 billion in 2022. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is also playing a vital role in enhancing the investment climate by creating a single continental market of 1.3 billion people and a combined GDP of over $3 trillion. The AfCFTA’s reduction of trade barriers, stimulation of industrialisation, and encouragement of investments beyond natural resources have been pivotal in attracting UAE investments. The creation of regional value chains, spurred by the AfCFTA, allows for increased production efficiency, appealing to investors seeking long-term returns.
These investments are fostering economic growth in Africa and strengthening the UAE’s geopolitical influence in key regions across the continent.
Our panel of experts will explore the evolving UAE-Africa Investment Corridor, the opportunities it presents, and how sustainable, strategic investment is shaping the future of this dynamic partnership.
