The pursuit of net-zero has been rapidly increasing in prominence the world-over in recent years. This concept, which gained prominence following the 2015 Paris Agreement and the 2018 IPCC report, underscores the urgent need for transformative action to limit global warming to 1.5°C. As global momentum builds towards achieving – or at least trying to achieve – net-zero, Africa finds itself at a pivotal juncture, and its journey to net zero, although very much in motion, is fraught with unique challenges and opportunities.
Despite contributing less than 4% of global carbon emissions, Africa disproportionately suffers from climate impacts – from floods to droughts to heatwaves. This paradox places the continent in a difficult position. Transitioning from a traditional energy mix – dominated by wood, charcoal, and fossil fuels – to greener alternatives is an immense task, especially for oil-rich nations reliant on oil revenues. Furthermore, the high upfront costs of green technologies and limited access to finance complicate the transition, creating a climate investment trap that hinders progress.
Nevertheless, Africa’s race to net zero presents numerous opportunities. Join us in Cape Town as our experts discuss how investing in renewable energy projects, supporting sustainable agricultural practices, and backing green technologies, stakeholders can drive both economic growth and environmental stewardship.
