Africa’s energy mix has been relatively constant for the last 30 years and despite successful renewable energy projects, the overall scale of renewables in Africa remains small. Africa’s current energy generation mix is dominated by fossil fuel generation at 74.5%, with hydropower making a meaningful renewable energy contribution at 15.7% (quoted from PwC Africa Energy Review 2023). There has been a more recent shift within the renewable energy mix to accelerate solar and wind technologies.
Unlocking Africa's renewable energy potential will be paramount for sustainable development and climate action. Our event titled 'Derisking Green Finance to Support Africa's Future Energy Landscape' will delve into innovative strategies and collaborative approaches to mitigate investment risks in renewable energy projects across the continent.
From robust policy frameworks to financial instruments and local capacity building, we shall look at the path to be navigated towards a greener, more resilient energy future for Africa. The discussion will also highlight the essence of policy harmonization, public-private collaboration, technology adoption, capacity building, innovative financial models and ESG standards in exploring innovative strategies for mitigating risks and accelerating the transition towards a cleaner and more resilient energy sector on the continent.
