Africa is at a pivotal juncture, where the trifecta challenges of energy access, security, and climate change present both urgency and a unique opportunity to redefine the continent’s energy future. A shift to renewables and cleaner energy systems offers a lifeline. Astonishingly, Africa received only 2% of global investments in renewables over the past two decades, while electrification rates have stagnated just shy of 50%.
The potential for renewable energy on the continent is staggering, with abundant wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal resources. What is more, renewables hold the promise of 6.4% higher GDP, 3.5% more economy-wide jobs, and a 25.4% higher welfare index under the International Renewable Energy Agency’s 1.5°C Scenario pathway. But Africa’s journey towards a sustainable energy future hinges on sound political leadership, attractive investment frameworks, and holistic policies.
In the run-up to the COP28 climate talks, our speakers will discuss and debate Africa's energy future, as well as the necessary investments, policies, and international support required to ensure the continent can achieve a just energy transition while safeguarding its people and the environment.
