Meridiam wins a contract to build and operate Togo’s second solar power plant

Meridiam has signed a 25-year Concession Agreement with the Republic of Togo and EDF for the design, construction, financing and operation of a 64 MWp photovoltaic solar power plant in Sokodé, in the centre of the country.

The plant will supply clean, renewable energy to more than 700,000 people in Sokodé and the surrounding rural towns, who currently have limited access to electricity. More than 200 local jobs will be created during the construction and operation of the plant (*).

The project, which is scheduled to start construction in mid-2024, will make a direct contribution to the national ambition of guaranteeing all Togolese universal access to energy by 2030[1] (compared with 66% today, with major disparities between urban and rural areas). It will also contribute to the country’s objective of achieving 50% renewable energy in its energy mix by 2025, bringing it up to 200 MW. It will also avoid more than 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 over the lifetime of the concession (*).

The agreement was signed during COP 28 in the presence of Mr Faure Gnassingbé, President of the Republic of Togo, Ms Mila Aziable, Togo’s Minister Delegate for Energy and Mines, and Thierry Déau, CEO of Meridiam.

Thierry Déau, CEO of Meridiam, said: “We are proud to contribute through this project to Togo’s dual ambition of providing all its citizens with universal access to electricity and increasing its production of renewable energy. This new project illustrates our commitment to the ecological transition, particularly in Africa, where we are already developing and operating over 500 MW of solar, hydro, wind, biomass and geothermal projects”.
